About Merriam

The Merriam neighborhood of Kansas City boasts of an excellent location just off of I-35 and only eight miles from the city's downtown. Merriam is one of the smaller suburbs/neighborhoods around Kansas City, but it is large enough to contain all the expected amenities a neighborhood should have like movie theaters, grocery stores, city parks, hotels, restaurants, and more.

The history of this neighborhood goes back to the mid 1800s when a group of Quakers devoted to converting the Native American Shawnee tribes in Ohio and Missouri to Christianity followed the natives to Kansas after the U.S. government relocated them. The settlement was originally called Campbellton, but was renamed after the then secretary treasurer of the railway (Merriam) when a railroad went through the town, causing it to swell and grow.

According to recent census data, the residents of Merriam enjoy an above average level of income and prosperity. As of the last census, residents here earned $7,000 more a year than the national average, and the percentage o f residents living in poverty is half of the national average.
